The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a sentiment indicator published by Alternative.me. Its scale runs from 0, representing extreme fear, to 100, representing extreme greed. The publisher describes the current index as focused on Bitcoin. It should not be treated as a reading of every individual crypto asset. Read the publisher’s methodology ↗
What does “greed” mean?
It describes an optimistic mood in the inputs the index measures. Alternative.me lists factors including volatility, market momentum and volume, social media, Bitcoin dominance and search trends. Its methodology also lists surveys as paused. Different sentiment products can use different inputs, so check the source before comparing two scores.
That score does not answer the question you probably care about: “Is this a sensible price for me?” A sentiment label alone gives you no valuation, no view of your financial circumstances and no reason to assume the next move will reverse the last one.
Put the reading beside a question
Imagine a hypothetical score of 78. You’re researching a token after a sharp price rise. Before treating that number as a reason to act, write down what would change your mind. Was the rise tied to a product announcement? Has the token’s supply changed? Is the activity broad, or are you looking at the same few accounts repeating a claim?
Those questions turn a sentiment reading into a starting point for research. They also keep a market-wide label from doing the work of a token-specific investigation.
A short checklist for your next read
- Check the timestamp. Compare the index with price and volume from the same period.
- Name the asset. A Bitcoin-focused reading is context for researching Ethereum or a smaller token; it is not a substitute for their own data.
- Keep a counterargument. Write the strongest reason your interpretation could be wrong, then look for evidence that would support it.
- Separate observation from action. “The reading is high” and “I should buy” are different statements. The second needs a much fuller argument.
